First ER Trip, Second Tooth

What an exhausting and busy day we had yesterday!

For about a week and a half, Kate has had a runny nose. I've heard from several people that is common during teething, so I pretty much brushed it off. Then on Thursday night, Kate coughed a few times, and it had that seal's bark sound to it. Once again I didn't think TOO much of it, because she'd had that before, and I took her to the Pediatrician, and it turned out to be nothing. Friday morning we woke up, and I took her over to daycare right away because I had an interview that morning. I could tell she wasn't 100%, but other than that I didn't notice anything too bad.

Well, a few minutes after I got home from the interview, they called and told me they were concerned about Kate. They could tell she wasn't feeling well, she didn't feel like eating her oatmeal and applesauce (which, if you know Kate, you know that is VERY out of the ordinary!) and that she just sounded awful, and her cough was getting worse. They recommended I take her to the doctor. So I did. Before we left I took her temperature, and it was up to 101.9. That's the highest it has been so far. She didn't have much fun at the Pediatrician's. She just wasn't feeling well, so when all of the poking and prodding wouldn't have been that big of a deal, it was all very traumatic for her. Then, worst of all, they suctioned as much of the mucous out of her respiratory system, she was SCREAMING during that, poor little thing. Anyway, she has Croup. They prescribed some steroids to give her to help ease the swelling in her throat, and told me that if she has any stridor (wheezy breathing) during rest or sleep, she needed to go to the Emergency Room.

So we went home, and Kate went down for a nap right away. I went in to check on her 30 minutes later, and her breathing sounded wheezy. I called my friend Kerry who is a Pediatric nurse, to hold her up to the phone and see what she thought. Kerry agreed it sound stridorous, and she recommended we get Kate to the ER. Jeff had come home sick from work, so we packed up and went.

The ER was pretty busy, we had to wait a while. They got us in and monitored her for a while. She didn't have any more stridor while they were monitoring her, and her oxygen levels were normal, so they decided the best thing was a good dose of steroids and send us on our way. So, we did. Kate fell asleep in her carseat while we were waiting to be discharged, when the stridor came back. I was glad the nurse was able to hear what I heard, and agree that it's stridor. So, she called in respiratory and we gave her a breathing treatment for an hour, then sent us on our way.

Kate had hardly gotten a nap all day, and was up about 4 hours past her bedtime! She was a total wreck towards the end of the day at the ER. She was just soooo tired, wanting her bed, wanting to be left alone, etc. I felt so bad for her, but overall she took it like a trooper.

She slept very soundly overnight, didn't cough once, and woke up a much happier baby. She took a 3 hour power nap this morning as well. It's nice to see her returning to my normal, happy Katers.

And in other news, her second tooth popped through yesterday! My big girl. Tomorrow is baby dedication at church. The Blairs are in town for it, and my parents will be coming over as well. Kate can't go in the nursery after the dedication is over, though, because of her Croup, so we're trying to decide whether to sit in back and hope she stays quiet, or just go home afterwards. Either way we are pretty excited!

Bye Bye Bouncy

I think Kate is all done with the Bouncy Seat. The last 5 times I've tried to put her in there, she whines and fusses. She wants to sit up like a big girl. She sits up very well assisted, and even lightly supervised, but she will still tip over every few minutes, so I can't leave her sitting up. Enter Bumbo. Up until this point I haven't been a very big fan of the Bumbo - she hasn't seemed to enjoy it ALL that much, but now she really likes it. Of course she'd rather be sitting up without it, but if I need to go do something quickly, I know I can put her in the Bumbo and she'll be fine. Jeff said that yesterday afternoon he had Kate in the Bumbo while I was at a baby shower. He turned Nascar on, and Kate was completely mesmerized. Silly girl.

I don't think there's really anything else all that new to report other than her second tooth is set to pop through any day! So I'll post a picture I took a few minutes ago. :)

Adventures in Baby Food

I had my first homemade baby food success today! I went produce shopping at our awesome local indoor farmers market store, Sprouts, so I picked up a squash to try my hand at making for Kate. It was a total success, and very easy! I had lots of fun and will definitely do it again, as well as branch out to new foods. And just because I have way too much time on my hands, I photo-documented the process.

Exhibit A: Butternut Squash

Photobucket

Two halves of the squash with the seeds scooped out. I had no idea how much it smelled and looked like a pumpkin inside! This also brought back nightmares of my mom trying to make us eat squash when we were kids...

Photobucket

Baking squash in the oven. Surprisingly it smelled good.

Pureeing squash in the blender.

All poured out into the ice cube trays with one serving for tonight in a Gerber pack. I'm guessing it made enough for probably 14 meals, which would be about $8 if I bought the baby food, but this one squash cost me about a dollar!

Photobucket

mmm, fresh squash. I tasted it, not bad! I thought the taste was good, but was surprised by the texture as it seemed a bit gritty or something...

6 Months!

I cannot believe my Sweet Baby Girl is 6 months old. Where does the time go?? On one hand I feel like she was just born yesterday. On the other hand, I can hardly remember life without her. She brings so much joy into our lives.

She won't be going to the doctor again until next months, so I did my own little measurements of her, so my apologies that her 6 month stats aren't official! :)

Weight: 17.4 Pounds (50th Percentile)
Height: 29 Inches (95th Percentile - TALL girl!!)
Head Circumference: 16.5 Inches (25th Percentile)

So she's growing pretty consistently along the markers, staying in similar percentiles each milestone.

Kate's First Tooth!

Kate is such a clockwork baby! She seems to do just about everything right "on time." She had her first smile one day shy of 6 weeks, and today she got her very first tooth, one day shy of 6 months! Such a big girl! It's the bottom right center tooth. I'm very thankful that she is such an easy teether. I had no clue it was coming - in fact, she has been an exceptionally happy girl the last couple days. I do remember my sister telling me that when Micah was teething he always seemed to get a stuffy/runny nose, which completely fits the bill for Kate. She hasn't been acting sick these last few days, but she's had a lot of congestion and runniness!

I can't believe how quickly she's growing up.

She also has some big news - she's going to have another cousin!!! My sister Andrea is expecting their second baby, due on May 23. We are so incredibly excited for them, and I can't wait to see who the newest little Hall is!

I also wanted to include this picture of Kate. This adorable monkey sleeper was a gift from our friends Aaron & Jimmie Kennedy, so I thought they'd enjoy seeing Kate now that she's finally big enough to wear it. :) Thanks guys!

Kate's First Election

Kate is following in her Grandpa Reuter's footsteps. She's very into this whole election thing. She's showing her Red State pride and reminding everyone to go out and vote for McCain/Palin today!

But, she also recognizes and respects each individual's freedom for a choice, so she says just get out and VOTE!

Bed Head

Kate's hair is getting long enough now that she is waking up every morning with a serious case of bed head. Here is today's lovely example!

Photobucket

She doesn't look quite like herself - she came down with a cold over the weekend so she's been a poor little sicky. She's taking it in stride and doesn't really seem to let it bother her though. I think she'll bounce back quickly.

And this is just a shout out to all you non-parents. Enjoy daylight savings time while you can. What extra hour of sleep? Kate woke up bright and early at 5:45 am today! I thought keeping her up late last night would help, but to no avail. So, enjoy that extra hour of sleep you get before you have kids! :)

Here's also a quick video of her first taste of peas a few days ago.
